Level 5 Award in Manage Work in Confined Spaces

COTS Training are specialists in Confined Space training. Our team of instructors have a wealth of experience and knowledge in the field of confined space work. We are one of the few training companies to have invested in a confined space chamber, specifically designed and built for training purposes. As well as the chamber, we also have a range of equipment used to aid the confined space courses we offer. This includes:

As well as novice, medium risk, and high risk confined space courses, COTS are proud to be an approved centre for the delivery of the Level 5 Award in Managing Work in Confined Spaces qualification (accredited by City & Guilds).


The Level 5 award is suitable for those who Manage work in confined Spaces. Candidates will have normally completed the relevant 6150 Medium Risk confined space entry qualification for the situations they manage and have managerial and safety awareness experience. Typical candidates will normally be an operational Manager involved in work in areas classified as confined spaces. Confined Space work areas can include areas such as:

  • Water treatment plant

  • Waste water treatment plant

  • Water distribution network

  • Sewerage network

  • Underground network

This course is designed for managers that are responsible for organising and planning work activities within a confined space. The manager may or may not supervise the actual job. This course focuses on planning, organizing and managing work safely in confined spaces including legislative roles and responsibilities, health and safety considerations and equipment requirements. Our delivery of this qualification is designed as a Level 5 Management Course and is predominantly classroom based with the Assessor attending the candidates’ workplace on 1 of the 5 days.

  • Be able to develop safe working methods for confined spaces

  • Be able to establish effective procedures for using permits to work

  • Be able to develop effective emergency arrangements

  • Be able to implement and maintain effective arrangements for document storage, review and audit

  • Understand legislative and industry confined space requirements for managing work in confined spaces

  • Understand how to develop risk assessments relevant to confined spaces work activities to be undertaken

  • Understand control measures for work activities to be undertaken in confined spaces

  • Understand safe methods of work for confined spaces work activities

  • Understand procedures for using permits to work

  • Understand how to develop effective emergency arrangements

  • Understand procedures for reporting systems and risk assessments
