Tug Tow Operations

Course Overview

The Tug Tow Operations course provides practical and theoretical training for personnel who operate towing tugs and tow tractors used in warehouses, manufacturing, aviation, and distribution environments. This course is ideal for drivers, yard staff, and logistics operatives responsible for towing trailers, dollies, or goods carts. Learners will develop the skills and awareness to operate safely, manage loads effectively, and reduce risks when manoeuvring in busy or confined areas.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Understand the function and common uses of towing tugs and tow tractors
• Identify the key components, controls, and safety features of the tug unit
• Conduct pre-use safety checks on the tug and towed equipment
• Recognise the legal and site-specific responsibilities under PUWER and workplace safety regulations
• Safely hitch and unhitch trailers or load carriers
• Demonstrate correct driving techniques for towing, including turning, reversing, and speed control
• Understand load capacity, weight limits, and trailer stability considerations
• Apply risk reduction techniques in shared spaces or restricted areas
• Use appropriate signage, hazard lights, and audible warnings during operations
• Identify and use correct PPE for towing operations
• Respond to mechanical issues, unsafe loads, or towing incidents
• Follow correct parking, shut-down, and post-use inspection procedures

Assessment Methods

Assessment is carried out through a combination of classroom-based theory and practical driving evaluation. Learners must demonstrate safe and competent operation of a towing tug and trailer under supervision.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and capable of operating machinery in an industrial or logistics setting. A reasonable level of English literacy is required to follow safety instructions and complete assessments.
