Course Overview

The Firewood and Kindling Processing Machines course provides practical and theoretical training for individuals operating mechanical log splitters, saws, and kindling processors used in timber and biomass production. This course is ideal for operatives in forestry, estates management, firewood businesses, and rural enterprises. Learners will gain essential safety knowledge and operational skills to process timber effectively, comply with legal requirements, and reduce the risk of injury when using powered splitting and cutting machinery.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Understand the risks associated with operating firewood and kindling processor machines
• Identify different types of firewood processors and kindling machines, including saw-splitter combinations and conveyor systems
• Conduct pre-use safety checks in line with manufacturer guidance and PUWER requirements
• Recognise and correctly use PPE for processing operations
• Understand correct loading, feeding, and discharge procedures
• Operate machines safely, including adjustments for timber size, cut length, and splitting force
• Identify hazards such as kickback, entanglement, blade contact, and ejection of debris
• Apply safe handling techniques for raw timber and processed materials
• Understand emergency stop functions and isolation procedures
• Maintain and clean machinery safely, including blade or chain care
• Comply with environmental considerations such as dust, noise, and timber waste
• Follow site-specific safety rules and manufacturer operating instructions

Assessment Methods

This course is assessed through a combination of classroom-based theory and hands-on practical training. Learners must pass a written quiz and demonstrate competent, safe use of firewood and kindling processor machinery.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, physically fit for manual handling and machine operation, and possess sufficient English literacy to understand technical instructions and safety procedures.
