Course Overview

The Towing Tractor and Trailer Operations course provides essential training for individuals who operate tractors with trailers across agricultural, industrial, estate, and municipal environments. This course is suitable for new and experienced operators involved in towing loads on- and off-road. It covers safe hitching, driving, reversing, and load security practices in accordance with legal and manufacturer guidelines. Completion of the course supports roles such as agricultural operator, grounds maintenance staff, and transport operative.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Understand the legal responsibilities and safety standards for towing with a tractor
• Identify the major components and operating controls of both the tractor and trailer
• Conduct pre-use checks on tractor and trailer, including hitching mechanism, brakes, tyres, and lights
• Select and use appropriate PPE for towing operations
• Hitch and unhitch trailers safely using correct procedures and communication signals
• Drive the tractor safely with and without a trailer over various terrain types
• Manoeuvre, reverse, and position the trailer accurately in confined or uneven areas
• Understand load distribution, weight limits, and trailer stability
• Identify and respond to common towing hazards such as jack-knifing, tipping, or loss of traction
• Apply correct braking techniques and safe stopping distances when towing
• Carry out post-use checks and safe shutdown procedures for both tractor and trailer

Assessment Methods

This course is assessed through a combination of classroom-based theory and practical skills assessment. Learners must demonstrate competent towing, reversing, hitching, and compliance with safety procedures.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and capable of operating machinery. An adequate level of English literacy is required to understand technical instructions and complete assessments. A valid driving licence may be required depending on the towing environment.
