Course Overview

The Stair Crawler Operations course (also known as a Stair Climber) provides essential training for individuals responsible for safely transporting loads up and down staircases using manual or powered stair climbing trolleys.

Suitable for delivery personnel, removals teams, facilities staff, and warehouse operatives, this course covers various types of stair. Learners will gain the practical skills and safety awareness needed to handle heavy or awkward loads efficiently while minimising the risk of injury or equipment damage.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Understand the purpose and applications of stair crawlers (manual and powered)
• Identify different types of stair climbers: wheel, track, push arm, and walker types
• Recognise the legal requirements under PUWER and Manual Handling Regulations
• Conduct pre-use inspections and safety checks on stair crawler equipment
• Select and use appropriate PPE for stair climbing operations
• Demonstrate correct handling techniques for ascending and descending stairs
• Operate manual and powered stair crawlers safely with various load types
• Understand safe working practices for indoor and outdoor staircases
• Apply appropriate load securing methods during transit
• Recognise potential hazards, including load shift, stair type, user fatigue, and restricted spaces
• Respond to equipment faults, emergencies, and unplanned obstacles
• Carry out post-use maintenance, cleaning, and safe storage procedures

Assessment Methods

This course is assessed through a combination of classroom-based theory and hands-on practical training. Learners must complete a written quiz and demonstrate safe and competent stair crawler operation in a simulated or live environment.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and capable of performing physical handling tasks. A reasonable level of English literacy is required to understand safety instructions and complete assessments. No prior experience is necessary.
