Course Overview

The Small Tools Awareness course provides essential safety training for individuals who use handheld workshop tools—both powered and unpowered—in their daily work. This course is suitable for maintenance staff, construction operatives, workshop technicians, and anyone working with common tools such as drills, grinders, hammers, saws, and screwdrivers. Learners will gain an understanding of safety checks, legal responsibilities, and correct usage techniques to reduce the risk of injury and ensure safe, efficient operation across a range of environments.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Understand the risks and hazards associated with handheld tools (manual and powered)
• Identify different types of small tools and their typical uses
• Learn the legal requirements under PUWER and other relevant regulations
• Conduct basic pre-use safety inspections on tools and accessories
• Identify and use appropriate PPE for small tool operations
• Recognise the signs of tool wear, damage, or unsafe condition
• Understand correct handling, grip, and posture to minimise fatigue and injury
• Learn safe storage, transportation, and maintenance practices
• Understand noise, vibration, dust, and other environmental risks
• Respond to tool-related incidents, malfunctions, or near-misses
• Apply workplace policies and manufacturer guidelines for safe use

Assessment Methods

This course is assessed through a classroom-based written theory quiz and may include practical demonstrations or tool identification exercises.

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and possess adequate English literacy to understand safety instructions and complete assessments. No prior experience is required, making this course suitable for new staff inductions or as a refresher for experienced workers.
