Course Overview

The Safe Fuelling of Generator and Fuel Handling course is designed to provide individuals with the essential knowledge and practical skills to refuel generators and handle fuel safely in compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations. This course is ideal for site operatives, maintenance staff, event crews, and anyone responsible for managing or operating fuel-powered generators. Learners will understand safe refuelling practices, storage protocols, spill prevention, and emergency response, helping to reduce fire, injury, and environmental risks.

Course Objectives

• Understand the risks and hazards associated with handling and storing fuel
• Recognise the types of fuels commonly used in generators (e.g., diesel, petrol, HVO) and their characteristics
• Understand legislation and regulations relating to fuel handling, including COSHH and fire safety
• Identify and use the correct PPE for fuelling tasks
• Conduct visual inspections of generators and fuel containers prior to fuelling
• Demonstrate safe fuelling procedures, including grounding, ventilation, and ignition control
• Understand how to store fuel safely, including segregation, containment, and labelling requirements
• Learn best practices for transporting fuel to and from the generator site
• Identify spill prevention techniques and use of spill kits
• Respond appropriately to fuel leaks, spills, and emergencies
• Maintain accurate fuelling records and follow site-specific protocols

Assessment Methods

This course is assessed through a classroom-based written theory assessment and, where applicable, a practical demonstration of safe fuelling procedures.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and able to work safely around flammable substances. A basic understanding of site safety is beneficial. English literacy is required to follow procedures and complete assessments.
