Course Overview

The Safe Fuelling of Gas & LPG Cylinders and Fuel Handling course provides essential training for individuals responsible for storing, handling, and connecting LPG and gas cylinders in the workplace. This course is suitable for forklift operators, site staff, maintenance teams, and event crews who work with propane, butane, or other liquefied gases. Learners will gain the knowledge and practical skills needed to handle fuel safely, reduce fire and explosion risks, and comply with health, safety, and environmental legislation.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Understand the properties and hazards associated with LPG and other gas fuels
• Recognise the legal duties under COSHH, DSEAR, and PUWER regulations
• Identify different types of gas and LPG cylinders and their components (valves, regulators, fittings)
• Conduct visual inspections of cylinders and regulators before use
• Select and wear the correct PPE for LPG fuelling and handling tasks
• Demonstrate safe connection, disconnection, and cylinder changeover procedures
• Understand correct storage, transportation, and segregation of gas cylinders
• Recognise warning signs of leaks, pressure issues, or equipment failure
• Use appropriate signage, ventilation, and emergency equipment
• Respond to gas leaks, fire risk, or fuel-related emergencies
• Follow site-specific procedures and manufacturer guidance for safe fuelling

Assessment Methods

This course is assessed through a classroom-based theory quiz and a practical demonstration of safe LPG cylinder handling and fuelling techniques.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, physically able to handle cylinders safely, and have a sufficient level of English literacy to follow instructions and complete assessments. No prior experience is required.
