Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

  • Duties under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 (HASAWA) and the risks associated with lorry loader use
  • Introduction to the Equipment & Hydraulic System
  • Discuss and demonstrate selection of a suitable operating area
  • Siting of the lorry loader and Deployment of the Stabiliser Legs
  • Understanding of the Lorry Loader Controls
  • Identify attachments, components and safety features
  • Pre-use Inspections
  • Operating the Vehicle-mounted Hydraulic Lorry Loader

Experience Levels

  • Novice – No prior Lorry Loader experience. Suitable for beginners who haven’t operated any kind of Lorry Loader before.
  • Existing – Operators who have used a Lorry Loader informally or under supervision but lack formal training or certification. Some hands-on experience is expected.
  • Refresher – For those with prior formal Lorry Loader training who need to renew certification, typically after 3–5 years, a break in usage, or following a workplace incident.
  • Conversion – For certified operators of a different type of Lorry Loader. Requires documented evidence prior to training and relevant operational experience.

Assessment Methods

Learners are assessed through a combination of practical skills tests and a written theory assessment to confirm understanding of safe operational procedures and legal responsibilities.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and capable of meeting the demands of practical training. An adequate level of English literacy is also required to fully engage with the course content and assessments. This course can also be offered as an in-house COTS Certification.
