RTITB Sideloader Lift Truck (LTG14)
Course Overview
This RTITB-accredited course trains individuals in the safe and effective operation of side loader lift trucks, which are ideal for transporting long or bulky loads such as timber or piping. The course is designed for operators working in manufacturing, warehousing, and yard-based environments where conventional forklifts may not be practical. Suitable for both new and experienced operators, the training ensures safe handling, compliance with legislation, and efficient manoeuvring.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes
- Understand the legal and safety responsibilities of operating a side loader lift truck
- Identify and describe the key components and controls of the machine
- Carry out thorough pre-use checks and routine inspections
- Manoeuvre safely in open spaces and confined yard environments
- Handle long and wide loads safely, including stacking and unstacking
- Apply load assessment techniques to maintain stability
- Demonstrate proper parking and shutdown procedures
Experience Levels
- Novice – No prior Side Loader Lift Truck experience. Suitable for beginners who haven’t operated any kind of Side Loader Lift Truck before.
- Existing – Operators who have used a Side Loader Lift Truck informally or under supervision but lack formal training or certification. Some hands-on experience is expected.
- Refresher – For those with prior formal Side Loader Lift Truck training who need to renew certification, typically after 3–5 years, a break in usage, or following a workplace incident.
- Conversion – For certified operators of a different type of Side Loader Lift Truck. Requires documented evidence prior to training and relevant operational experience.
ABA Categories
Each course will be run using ONE of the following categories, please ensure you book the course that uses the category you require.
C1 – Side loader up to and including 5 tonne
C2 – Side loader over 5 tonne up to and including 15 tonne
C3 – Side loader over 15 tonne
Assessment Methods
Assessment is conducted through a combination of theory testing and practical performance evaluations. Learners must demonstrate both operational competence and theoretical understanding of safe practices.
Additional Information
Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and able to meet the physical and cognitive demands of operating a side loader. An adequate level of English literacy is required to understand course content and complete assessments. This course can also be offered as an in-house COTS Certification.
