RTITB Rough Terrain Telescopic Handler (Telehandler) (LTG6)

Course Overview

This RTITB-accredited course is designed for individuals operating rough terrain telescopic handlers (Telehandler), commonly used in construction, agriculture, and industrial environments. Suitable for both novice and experienced operators, the training provides learners with the skills and knowledge to operate telescopic handlers safely across uneven ground, lifting and placing loads efficiently while complying with legal and site safety requirements.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Understand operator responsibilities under health and safety legislation
• Identify and explain the components and functions of a rough terrain telescopic handler
• Conduct pre-use inspections and report defects appropriately
• Operate the machine safely across rough, uneven ground
• Manoeuvre with and without loads in open and confined spaces
• Stack and de-stack loads at various heights using correct techniques
• Assess loads for size, weight, and stability before handling
• Demonstrate correct parking, shutdown, and securing procedures

Experience Levels

• Novice – No prior Rough Terrain Telehandler experience. Suitable for beginners who haven’t operated any kind of telehandler before.
• Existing – Operators who have used a Rough Terrain Telehandler informally or under supervision but lack formal training or certification. Some hands-on experience is expected.
• Refresher – For those with prior formal Rough Terrain Telehandler training who need to renew certification, typically after 3–5 years, a break in usage, or following a workplace incident.
• Conversion – For certified operators of a different type of Rough Terrain Telehandler. Requires documented evidence prior to training and relevant operational experience.

ABA Categories

Each course will be run using ONE of the following categories, please ensure you book the course that uses the category you require.

• J2 – Rough terrain variable reach lift trucks – up to 9m lift
• J3 – Rough terrain high lift telescopic trucks – above 9m lift

Assessment Methods

Assessment includes a written theory test and practical evaluations. Learners must demonstrate both safe operation and theoretical knowledge of load handling and machine control.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and capable of meeting the physical and cognitive demands of training. An adequate level of English literacy is also required to fully engage with course materials and complete assessments. This course can also be offered as an in-house COTS Certification.
