RTITB Rough Terrain Masted Lift Truck (LTG5)

Course Overview

This RTITB-accredited course is designed for operators of rough terrain masted lift trucks, which are widely used in construction, agriculture, and outdoor industrial environments. The course is suitable for both new and experienced operators and focuses on the safe operation of these machines on uneven ground. It provides essential skills for roles that involve the movement, stacking, and transport of loads over rough terrain.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Understand the responsibilities of lift truck operators under current legislation
• Identify key components and controls of a rough terrain masted lift truck
• Conduct pre-use checks and report any defects in line with procedures
• Operate the lift truck safely over rough and uneven surfaces
• Manoeuvre the truck with and without loads in various environments
• Stack and de-stack loads at different heights safely and accurately
• Assess loads for size, weight, and stability
• Demonstrate correct shutdown, parking, and securing practices

Experience Levels

• Novice – No prior Rough Terrain Masted Lift Truck experience. Suitable for beginners who haven’t operated any kind of lift truck before.
• Existing – Operators who have used a Rough Terrain Masted Lift Truck informally or under supervision but lack formal training or certification. Some hands-on experience is expected.
• Refresher – For those with prior formal Rough Terrain Masted Lift Truck training who need to renew certification, typically after 3–5 years, a break in usage, or following a workplace incident.
• Conversion – For certified operators of a different type of Rough Terrain Masted Lift Truck. Requires documented evidence prior to training and relevant operational experience.

Assessment Methods

Candidates are assessed through a written theory test and practical demonstrations of safe and effective machine operation in outdoor and challenging terrain.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, physically capable of operating machinery on uneven surfaces, and in good health. An adequate level of English literacy is required to understand the training materials and complete the assessments. This course can also be offered as an in-house COTS Certification.
