Course Overview

This RTITB-accredited course is designed for individuals who operate overhead gantry cranes within an industrial or manufacturing environment. It is suitable for both new and experienced operators responsible for lifting, moving, or positioning heavy loads using pendant or remote-controlled gantry systems. The course focuses on safe operating practices, equipment inspections, and regulatory compliance, enabling participants to perform their duties safely and effectively.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Identify and explain key components and safety systems of overhead gantry cranes
• Conduct thorough pre-use inspections and report defects appropriately
• Understand the roles and responsibilities of crane operators under current legislation
• Plan and perform lifting operations using safe working loads and lifting accessories
• Communicate effectively using standard hand signals or verbal instruction when applicable
• Apply safe load control techniques and identify hazards associated with lifting operations
• Demonstrate shutdown and isolation procedures post-operation

Experience Levels

• Novice – No prior Gantry Crane experience. Suitable for beginners who haven’t operated any kind of Gantry Crane before.
• Refresher – For those with prior formal Gantry Crane training who need to renew certification, typically after 3–5 years, a break in usage, or following a workplace incident.

Assessment Methods

Participants are evaluated through both written theory assessments and practical observation exercises. Successful learners must demonstrate a competent and safe approach to operating an overhead gantry crane and managing lifting tasks.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and able to meet the physical demands of crane operation and load handling. An adequate level of English literacy is also required to fully engage with the course content and assessments. This course can also be offered as an in-house COTS Certification.
