This RTITB-accredited course provides practical training in safe manual handling techniques, tailored specifically for those working in transport, warehousing, and logistics (TWL) environments. It is suitable for warehouse operatives, drivers, porters, and other logistics staff whose roles involve moving or lifting loads. The course helps reduce injury risk, improve posture and lifting techniques, and ensures compliance with health and safety legislation.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes
- Understand the importance of safe manual handling in TWL industries
- Identify common manual handling risks and how injuries occur
- Describe the functions of the spine and principles of safe lifting
- Recognise employer and employee responsibilities under health and safety law
- Demonstrate safe handling techniques for lifting, lowering, pushing, and pulling
- Apply the TILE (Task, Individual, Load, Environment) risk assessment model
- Perform team lifts safely and assess when mechanical assistance is required
- Recognise and avoid unsafe manual handling practices in the workplace
Experience Levels
- Novice – No prior Manual Handling training experience.
- Refresher – For those with prior formal Manual Handling training who need to renew certification, typically after 3–5 years, a break in usage, or following a workplace incident.
Assessment Methods
Learners are assessed through both practical demonstrations and a short theory test. Candidates must show they can apply proper techniques and understand the principles behind safe manual handling.
Additional Information
Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and capable of participating in manual handling activities. An adequate level of English literacy is also required to fully engage with the course content and complete assessments. This course can also be offered as an in-house COTS Certification.
