Road Sweeper Operations

Course Overview

The Road Sweeper course provides comprehensive training for individuals operating road sweepers in both on- and off-highway environments. This course is suitable for operators working in sectors such as highways maintenance, construction, industrial cleaning, and local authority services. Participants will gain practical and theoretical knowledge required for safe, effective, and environmentally compliant operation. Upon completion, candidates will be equipped to carry out sweeping tasks, manage waste materials, and maintain the sweeper to industry and legal standards.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as a road sweeper operator
• Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
• Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
• Be able to locate and identify steering, driving and braking controls and explain their functions
• Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for sweeper use
• Conduct all pre-operational and running checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements
• Safely mount and dismount the machine
• Configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely across varying terrain in open and confined areas
• Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
• Manoeuvre the machine to the work area and correctly configure in readiness to carry out sweeping tasks
• Carry out sweeping tasks safely and efficiently
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of tipping procedures, diverse waste, types of hazardous and toxic waste, and waste landfill codes
• Environmental considerations
• Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

Assessment Methods

This course is assessed through a combination of classroom-based theory and hands-on practical training. Learners are evaluated via a written theory quiz and a practical skills assessment.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and capable of meeting the demands of practical training. An adequate level of English literacy is also required to fully engage with the course content and assessments.
