What you will learn

By the end of the NPORS Slinger / Signaller course, delegates will:

• Have a basic understanding of the lifting industry, the dangers of working in the industry, and their responsibilities as a slinger / signaller
• Be able to conform to manufacturer requirements, relevant regulations, and legislation
• Locate, identify, and explain different types of lifting equipment and lifting accessories, including their basic construction, uses, applications, and functions
• Interpret and extract information from lifting plans and other relevant documentation
• Carry out pre-use checks on non-specialist lifting accessories and identify non-serviceable items
• Explain procedures for placing non-serviceable lifting accessories out of service
• Identify and explain centres of gravity and calculate estimated weights of loads
• Set up exclusion zones, identify overhead hazards, and explain the actions required in an emergency
• Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for slinger / signaller duties
• Secure various types of loads to a hook using the relevant lifting accessories and procedures, ensuring load balance, security, and integrity
• Direct and guide the movement of loads to different locations using recognised signalling methods and other agreed communication techniques
• Take account of environmental considerations such as ground conditions, weather, and nearby operations
• Carry out all out-of-service and securing procedures when lifting operations are complete

Practical exercises mirror typical lifting scenarios where possible, giving delegates the chance to put the theory into practice under the guidance of an experienced instructor.

Assessment and certification

This NPORS Slinger / Signaller course is assessed through a combination of classroom-based theory and hands on practical training. Learners complete a written theory quiz to check their understanding of legislation, lifting equipment, and safe systems of work, followed by a practical skills assessment where they must sling loads and signal safely and effectively.

Delegates who meet the required standard in both parts of the assessment successfully complete the course and receive the NPORS Slinger / Signaller (N402) certification.

Entry requirements and additional information

To attend this course, candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and capable of meeting the demands of practical training, including handling lifting accessories and working on an active site. An adequate level of spoken and written English is required so that delegates can fully engage with the course content and assessments. There are no formal qualification requirements, although any previous exposure to lifting operations or construction work will be beneficial.

This course can also be delivered as a COTS-accredited in-house course. In-house training can take place either at the COTS Training centre or at customer premises (where appropriate lifting equipment and facilities are available) and is not tied to an external awarding body syllabus, which gives COTS greater flexibility to tailor the content, examples, and emphasis to the customer’s lifting operations, equipment, and procedures.

PPE requirements

For the practical session, delegates must wear suitable personal protective equipment. This includes:

• Safety footwear
• Suitable work clothing
• Hard hat
• High-visibility vest or jacket
