You do not need previous ladder safety training to attend. The course starts with the basics and builds up, so as long as delegates are familiar with general workplace safety, they will be able to follow the content.

What you will learn

On completion of the NPORS Safe Use of Stepladders and Ladders (N711) course, delegates will be able to:

• Explain the main hazards of working with ladders and their responsibilities under the health and safety law.
• Use the manufacturer’s handbook for a particular ladder and understand why it must be followed.
• Locate and identify the major components of stepladders and ladders and explain their functions.
• Carry out pre-use safety checks in line with manufacturer and legislative requirements.
• Select the correct type and size of ladder for the task being carried out.
• Identify and maintain PPE that is appropriate for ladder use.
• Position, erect, dismantle and relocate ladders and stepladders safely and efficiently.
• Carry out simple end-of-work inspections and identify when equipment should be removed from service.
• Consider environmental factors, such as ground conditions, weather and nearby hazards.
• Store ladders correctly to prevent damage and extend their service life.

The emphasis is on practical, real-world ladder tasks, so delegates leave with skills they can apply immediately on site.

Assessment and certification

This ladder safety course is assessed through a combination of theory and practical elements. Delegates complete a short, written theory quiz to confirm their understanding, followed by a practical skills assessment where they demonstrate safe selection, setup, use and inspection of stepladders and ladders.

Both parts of the assessment must be completed to the required standard in order to pass the course and receive NPORS Safe Use of Stepladders and Ladders (N711) certification. At COTS Training, this NPORS certification is currently valid for three years.

Entry requirements and additional information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health and capable of meeting the demands of practical ladder work, including carrying, positioning and climbing ladders safely. An adequate level of spoken and written English is required so that delegates can follow safety instructions, course materials and assessments.

This NPORS Safe Use of Stepladders and Ladders course can also be delivered as an in-house COTS certification for organisations that would prefer a more site/duty/person specific training course.

PPE requirements

For the practical element of the NPORS Safe Use of Stepladders and Ladders (N711) course, delegates must wear suitable personal protective equipment, including:
