NPORS Road Roller (N214)

Course Overview

The NPORS Road Roller course (N214) provides training for individuals operating ride-on rollers in compaction tasks for highways, construction sites, and groundwork projects. Suitable for operatives involved in tarmac laying, road repair, and large-scale landscaping, the course ensures compliance with safety standards and efficient roller operation. Candidates are prepared for roles such as plant operator or groundwork assistant in civil engineering and road surfacing.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator
• Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
• Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
• Be able to locate and identify key controls and explain their functions
• Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements
• Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for road roller use
• Prepare the road roller for use and operate the machine safely and efficiently
• Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
• Attach and set trailed, mounted attachments ready for work
• Environmental considerations
• Storage and transport of road roller implements and attachments
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation
• Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

Assessment Methods

This course is assessed through a combination of classroom-based theory and hands-on practical training. Learners are evaluated via a written theory quiz and a practical skills assessment.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and capable of meeting the demands of practical training. An adequate level of English literacy is also required to fully engage with the course content and assessments. This course can also be offered as an in-house COTS Certification.
