NPORS Materials Re-Handler (N722)

Course Overview

This course provides practical and theoretical training for operating material re-handlers—machines commonly used for moving and sorting bulk materials in waste management, construction, and recycling industries. It is aimed at operatives who handle aggregates, scrap metal, wood, or refuse using hydraulic re-handlers. Completing the course enables participants to work in operational roles within recycling centres, transfer stations, or large-scale site logistics.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator
• Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
• Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
• Be able to locate and identify key controls and explain their functions
• Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements
• Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for materials re-handler use
• Prepare the materials re-handler for use and operate machinery safely and efficiently
• Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
• Operate machinery safely and efficiently
• Environmental considerations
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation
• Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

Assessment Methods

This course is assessed through a combination of classroom-based theory and hands-on practical training. Learners are evaluated via a written theory quiz and a practical skills assessment.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and capable of meeting the demands of practical training. An adequate level of English literacy is also required to fully engage with the course content and assessments. This course can also be offered as an in-house COTS Certification.
