Course Overview

The NPORS N209 Loading Shovel course is designed to provide learners with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to safely and efficiently operate a loading shovel in a variety of working environments. This course covers industry responsibilities, relevant health and safety legislation, machine components and controls, pre-operational checks, safe operating techniques, environmental considerations, and correct shutdown procedures. It is suitable for novice operators, those requiring refresher training, and experienced workers seeking formal certification.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Understand the construction and plant industry, associated hazards, and operator responsibilities
• Demonstrate knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation and site rules
• Interpret and apply information from the manufacturer’s operating handbook
• Identify major loading shovel components and explain their functions
• Locate, identify, and correctly use machine controls
• Carry out pre-operational and running checks in line with manufacturer and legal requirements
• Select and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Conduct safety checks within the work area, identifying and controlling hazards
• Safely prepare and operate a loading shovel under varying site conditions
• Apply correct loading, unloading, and material handling techniques
• Demonstrate awareness of environmental considerations, including noise, dust, and spill control
• Store and transport loading shovel attachments safely
• Perform correct end-of-shift, shutdown, and machine security procedures

Assessment Methods

This course is assessed through a combination of classroom-based theory and hands-on practical training. Learners are evaluated via a written theory quiz and a practical skills assessment.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and capable of meeting the demands of practical training. An adequate level of English literacy is also required to fully engage with the course content and assessments. This course can also be offered as an in-house COTS Certification.
