NPORS Cable Avoidance Tool (N304)

Course Overview

This course provides training on the use of Cable Avoidance Tools (CAT) and signal generators to detect underground services. It is suitable for utility workers, groundworkers, and contractors responsible for excavation or digging activities. The training prepares learners for roles requiring the safe identification of buried cables and pipes to prevent utility strikes.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operative
• Be able to locate and identify the major components of the cable avoidance tool and explain their functions
• Be able to locate and identify controls and explain their functions
• Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements
• Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for cable avoidance tool use
• Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
• Operate the cable avoidance tool safely and efficiently in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and industry best practice
• Environmental considerations
• Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

Assessment Methods

This course is assessed through a combination of classroom-based theory and hands-on practical training. Learners are evaluated via a written theory quiz and a practical skills assessment.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and capable of meeting the demands of practical training. An adequate level of English literacy is also required to fully engage with the course content and assessments. This course can also be offered as an in-house COTS Certification.
