Course Overview
The Multi Lift and Drop – Hook Loader Vehicle course is designed for individuals who operate or supervise the use of hook loader vehicles for transporting and handling roll-on/roll-off containers. This course is ideal for operators working in waste management, construction, and logistics sectors. It provides comprehensive training in vehicle preparation, container handling, hazard awareness, and safe operation procedures. Successful candidates can pursue roles such as hook loader operator, refuse vehicle driver, or site logistics operative.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes
- Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as a plant operator
- Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
- Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
- Be able to locate and identify the operating controls and explain their functions
- Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements
- Configure the vehicle ready for travel, on site and on the public highway
- Travel over various types of ground i.e. level ground, undulating ground – loaded and unloaded
- Manoeuvre in confined spaces loaded and unloaded
- Check the suitability of the loading and unloading area
- Check for hazards, i.e. overhead hazards, ground hazards, and explain all necessary precautions
- Position the vehicle safely and correctly to conduct loading/unloading operations
- Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for machine use
- Pick up and deposit skips of various sizes and weights
- Transfer skips to various locations
- Check the skip and load for security and integrity
- Check that all skips are left in a safe manner when deposited
- Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures
Assessment Methods
This course is assessed through a combination of classroom-based theory and hands-on practical training. Learners are evaluated via a written theory quiz and a practical skills assessment.
Additional Information
Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and capable of meeting the demands of practical training. An adequate level of English literacy is also required to fully engage with the course content and assessments.
