Low Loader Operations

Course Overview

The Low Loader Operations course provides specialised training for operators and drivers responsible for transporting heavy plant, machinery, or oversized loads using low loader trailers. This course is ideal for those in construction, plant hire, logistics, and transport industries. Learners will gain the practical and theoretical skills needed to prepare, load, secure, transport, and unload safely—ensuring compliance with road traffic laws and site safety standards. Successful candidates will be equipped to handle complex loading tasks with confidence and precision.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Understand the roles and responsibilities involved in low loader operations
• Identify key components of the low loader trailer, including ramps, winches, hydraulic systems, and securing points
• Conduct pre-use checks on tractor units and trailers
• Understand vehicle and load legal limits, including weight, width, and height restrictions
• Select and inspect appropriate load securing equipment (chains, straps, blocking systems)
• Demonstrate safe loading and unloading procedures for plant and oversized equipment
• Position and balance loads correctly to maintain trailer stability during transport
• Understand road safety, route planning, and signage requirements for abnormal loads
• Apply correct use of PPE and risk control measures on site and during transit
• Comply with relevant legislation including PUWER, LOLER, Road Vehicles Regulations, and DVSA guidelines
• Carry out end-of-shift checks and post-transport inspections

Assessment Methods

This course is assessed through a combination of classroom-based theory and practical loading and unloading exercises. Learners must demonstrate safe and competent low loader operation.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, physically capable of handling load equipment, and possess a valid LGV licence where applicable. English literacy is required to follow safety procedures and complete assessments.
