Course Overview

The Load Security Training course is designed to ensure that drivers, loaders, and transport personnel understand how to secure loads safely and legally for road transport. Suitable for operatives in logistics, haulage, construction, and utilities, this course focuses on the principles of safe load restraint, vehicle stability, and legal compliance. Learners will gain the practical skills and awareness needed to reduce the risk of accidents, injury, and prosecution due to insecure loads.

  • Understand the legal requirements for securing loads under the Road Traffic Act, DVSA guidelines, and industry best practice
  • Identify common causes and consequences of load shift during transit
  • Recognise different vehicle types and how their design affects load security
  • Understand forces acting on loads during braking, turning, and acceleration
  • Select and use appropriate securing methods and equipment (e.g. straps, chains, nets, friction mats)
  • Apply load restraint techniques for various cargo types, including pallets, machinery, and loose materials
  • Conduct pre-departure checks and record securing arrangements
  • Understand working load limits (WLL) and safe anchorage points
  • Comply with load documentation and signage requirements (e.g. gross weight, hazardous loads)
  • Identify unsafe conditions and take corrective action
  • Respond to incidents involving load movement or failure

Assessment Methods

This course is assessed through a written theory test and optional practical demonstrations of load securing techniques. Learners must demonstrate knowledge of legal standards and practical application.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years old and possess sufficient English literacy to understand technical guidance and complete assessments. No previous load securing experience is necessary. This course complements CPC hours or Health & Safety induction training.
