LGV Tipper Truck Operations

Course Overview

The LGV Tipper Truck Operations course provides practical and theoretical training for drivers and operatives who use large goods vehicles (LGVs) fitted with tipping bodies. This course is ideal for those working in construction, quarrying, highways, waste management, and haulage sectors. Learners will develop the skills and awareness needed to operate tipper trucks safely, manage loads correctly, and comply with relevant road and site safety regulations. Successful completion supports roles such as tipper driver, site delivery operative, or fleet operator.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Understand the legal responsibilities and regulations for operating LGV tipper vehicles on and off the public highway
• Identify vehicle components and controls specific to tipper systems
• Conduct pre-use vehicle and tipping gear inspections in line with manufacturer guidance and site requirements
• Understand safe load distribution, weight limits, and sheeting/un-sheeting procedures
• Safely manoeuvre the vehicle on varied terrain, including confined or uneven sites
• Operate the tipping mechanism safely and understand the risks of rollover and instability
• Identify and respond to common hazards, such as overhead obstructions, soft ground, or nearby personnel
• Demonstrate safe procedures for loading and discharging bulk materials
• Understand the importance of PPE, communication, and exclusion zones on active sites
• Follow shut down, cleaning, and post-operation checks for vehicle and body systems

Assessment Methods

This course is assessed through a combination of classroom-based theory and practical driving and tipping assessments. Learners must demonstrate safe operation under typical worksite and highway conditions.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and hold a valid LGV Category C or C+E licence. A good level of physical fitness and English literacy is required to complete the course content and assessments. Prior experience with site vehicles is beneficial but not essential.
