Course Overview

The Hand-Held Power Blower course is designed to train individuals in the safe and effective use of powered leaf blowers for grounds maintenance, landscaping, and cleaning operations. It prepares learners to use power blowers responsibly in a variety of settings, supporting roles in groundskeeping, horticulture, and environmental maintenance.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Understand the hazards and risks associated with operating a hand-held power blower
• Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the specific machine used
• Identify and explain the function of major components and key controls
• Conduct pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer and legislative requirements
• Select a suitable blower type for the task and working environment
• Correctly identify and wear the required PPE for blower operation
• Prepare and start the machine using safe and approved methods
• Carry out all necessary safety checks at the work area and establish an exclusion zone
• Operate the power blower efficiently, including control of debris and minimising disruption to the public
• Understand environmental considerations such as noise, dust, and fuel emissions
• Demonstrate correct shutdown, cleaning, and post-use inspection
• Store and transport the power blower safely
• Dispose of collected debris in accordance with site protocols and leave the area clean and secure

Assessment Methods

This course is assessed through a combination of classroom-based theory and hands-on practical training. Learners are evaluated via a written theory quiz and a practical skills assessment.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and capable of meeting the demands of practical training. An adequate level of English literacy is also required to fully engage with the course content and assessments.
