Grass Strimmer Operations

Course Overview

The Grass Strimmers (Brushcutters/Trimmers) course is designed to provide learners with the practical skills and safety knowledge required to operate handheld strimmers and brushcutters effectively. This training is suitable for grounds maintenance workers, landscapers, estate workers, and anyone responsible for managing grass, weeds, or overgrowth in outdoor environments. Completion of this course can lead to roles involving groundskeeping, vegetation clearance, and soft landscaping, particularly in local authority, commercial, or environmental management settings.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working with grass strimmers, and the operator’s responsibilities
• Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the specific equipment used
• Be able to locate and identify major components of the strimmer and explain their functions
• Be able to locate and identify key controls and explain their functions
• Conduct pre-operational checks in line with manufacturer and legislative requirements
• Select suitable equipment based on the work being undertaken and environmental conditions
• Identify and correctly wear PPE appropriate to strimmer/brushcutter use
• Prepare and start the strimmer safely and efficiently
• Conduct necessary site safety checks and establish exclusion zones
• Operate machinery safely, including correct techniques for different terrains and vegetation types
• Understand environmental considerations including noise, vibration, and debris control
• Demonstrate correct shutdown, cleaning, and post-use checks
• Store and transport the strimmer safely
• Dispose of strimmed vegetation appropriately and leave work areas clean and secure

Assessment Methods

This course is assessed through a combination of classroom-based theory and hands-on practical training. Learners are evaluated via a written theory quiz and a practical skills assessment.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and capable of meeting the demands of practical training. An adequate level of English literacy is also required to fully engage with the course content and assessments.
