Grass Cutter – Ride-On Mower

Course Overview

The Ride-On Mowers course provides in-depth training for individuals who operate or intend to operate ride-on mowing equipment in parks, sports grounds, estates, or commercial landscapes. This course is ideal for groundskeepers, landscaping professionals, and local authority maintenance personnel. Learners will develop the knowledge and skills needed to operate ride-on mowers safely and efficiently in line with legislation, supporting roles that require the regular use of powered turf maintenance equipment.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator
• Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
• Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
• Be able to locate and identify key controls and explain their functions
• Set up exclusion zone
• Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements
• Select suitable type of machine relative to the work being undertaken
• Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for grass cutters – mower use
• Prepare the grass cutter – mower for use
• Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
• Operate machinery safely and efficiently
• Environmental considerations
• Storage and transport of grass cutter – mower
• Disposal of cut materials
• Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

Assessment Methods

This course is assessed through a combination of classroom-based theory and hands-on practical training. Learners are evaluated via a written theory quiz and a practical skills assessment.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and capable of meeting the demands of practical training. An adequate level of English literacy is also required to fully engage with the course content and assessments.
