Course Overview

The Driver Assessment course is designed to evaluate the driving competence, safety awareness, and road behaviour of professional or vocational drivers across a range of vehicle types. Suitable for new recruits, agency drivers, or as part of ongoing fleet safety management, this course helps employers ensure drivers meet operational and legal standards. Assessments can be tailored to LGV, van, minibus, or car drivers and provide valuable insight into individual training needs and risk levels.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Assess driver competence in line with company policy and current UK road legislation
• Evaluate vehicle control, hazard perception, and adherence to speed limits and signage
• Identify unsafe driving habits such as harsh braking, poor positioning, or excessive speed
• Review use of mirrors, observation, and space management
• Assess understanding of load security and vehicle-specific safety protocols
• Provide feedback on route planning, fuel-efficient driving, and customer interaction where applicable
• Observe compliance with driver hours, rest breaks, and daily vehicle checks
• Highlight training needs or areas requiring corrective action
• Complete a written report summarising driver performance and risk category
• Support insurance, compliance, and internal auditing requirements

Assessment Methods

This course is delivered as a practical, on-road driving assessment with a qualified assessor. The driver is scored against a standardised checklist and receives verbal and written feedback upon completion. Optional theory testing may be included depending on company requirements.

Additional Information

Candidates must hold a valid driving licence for the class of vehicle being assessed. They must be medically fit and able to communicate effectively in English to receive instruction and feedback. This course is suitable for both new and experienced drivers.
