Course Overview

The Close Proximity Operations course is designed for drivers and operatives who operate vehicles in tight, restricted, or high-risk environments such as narrow country lanes, residential streets, urban estates, or pedestrian-heavy areas. Ideal for those driving for councils, local authorities, or private contractors, the course is especially relevant for refuse collection vehicles, vans, and vehicles towing trailers. Learners will develop the skills and awareness needed to manoeuvre safely, manage blind spots, and minimise the risk of collision or injury in confined or populated areas.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Understand the risks and challenges of operating in close proximity to pedestrians, vehicles, property, and infrastructure
• Recognise the legal responsibilities of drivers under the Highway Code, PUWER, and local authority guidelines
• Identify vehicle blind spots and implement strategies to improve all-round visibility
• Conduct comprehensive pre-use checks with focus on mirrors, cameras, sensors, and warning systems
• Demonstrate slow-speed manoeuvring, reversing, and turning techniques in restricted environments
• Safely navigate narrow roads, cul-de-sacs, housing estates, and shared access routes
• Use spotters, banksmen, or reversing assistants effectively and communicate clearly
• Apply hazard awareness techniques including safe approach to bins, obstructions, or pedestrians
• Understand route planning and dynamic risk assessment for close quarters driving
• Safely operate with towed trailers in confined areas
• Respond to near-misses, minor impacts, or environmental constraints (e.g. parked vehicles, low-hanging branches)
• Follow site- or council-specific protocols and community safety standards

Assessment Methods

This course is assessed through a combination of classroom-based theory and a supervised practical driving assessment in a simulated or real-world environment. Learners must demonstrate safe judgement and control in close proximity settings.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years old, hold a valid driving licence appropriate to the vehicle used, and have sufficient English literacy to follow instructions and complete the assessment. This course is highly suitable for drivers of refuse collection vehicles, council vehicles, and utility fleet operatives.
