City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Control Entry and Arrangements for Confined Spaces (6160-04)

Course Overview

This course is designed for individuals who act as the entry controller or “top person” responsible for managing confined space entry without entering the space themselves. Suitable for roles in both water and non-water industries, the course ensures participants understand how to implement procedures, control access, maintain communication, and manage emergency situations involving confined spaces in line with national occupational standards.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Implement procedures for teams working in confined spaces
• Control safe entry and exit to the confined space
• Monitor work teams to ensure correct procedures are followed
• Respond to and control emergency situations
• Understand health and safety and environmental legislation relevant to confined spaces
• Understand standard protocols for confined space work
• Fulfil entry controller responsibilities and communication duties
• Conduct appropriate equipment checks and environmental testing

Assessment Methods

Assessment includes a written theory test and practical evaluation. Operators must achieve competency in all assessed elements, including safe setup, lifting, and shutdown procedures, to receive certification.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and capable of meeting the demands of practical training. An adequate level of English literacy is also required to fully engage with the course content and assessments. This course can also be offered as an in-house COTS Certification.
