Course Overview

This City & Guilds-accredited course is aimed at individuals who need awareness of working in or around low risk confined spaces but are not expected to enter them. It provides essential knowledge about the hazards of confined spaces and outlines legal responsibilities, safety protocols, and emergency procedures. The course is suitable for supervisors, safety personnel, and workers who may support confined space operations without entering the environment.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Understand what constitutes a confined space and the risks involved
• Gain knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997
• Recognise the importance of risk assessments and safe systems of work
• Identify methods of avoiding entry and reducing exposure
• Learn about emergency procedures related to confined space work
• Understand the use and purpose of safety equipment, such as tripods and man-riding winches
• Apply principles of risk control through short practical exercises
• Demonstrate knowledge through successful completion of a theory test

Assessment Methods

Assessment includes a written theory test and practical evaluation. Operators must achieve competency in all assessed elements, including safe setup, lifting, and shutdown procedures, to receive certification.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and capable of meeting the demands of practical training. An adequate level of English literacy is also required to fully engage with the course content and assessments. This course can also be offered as an in-house COTS Certification.
