Course Overview

This course is designed for personnel required to enter confined spaces classified as High Risk (NC4). It equips delegates with the necessary skills and knowledge to work safely in high-risk environments where there may be significantly hazardous conditions such as poor atmospheres, complex entry/exit routes, or the need for full breathing apparatus. This course is suitable for operatives in sectors including utilities, construction, and emergency services.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Understand relevant legislation and legal obligations
• Identify confined space hazards and risks
• Apply risk assessments and develop safe systems of work
• Enter and exit high-risk confined spaces safely and efficiently
• Operate gas monitoring equipment accurately and interpret readings
• Use self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and escape sets correctly
• Apply the safe use of harnesses, tripods, and man-riding winches
• Maintain effective communication and follow entry protocols
• Respond to emergencies with confidence and control
• Demonstrate PPE use and practical confined space procedures

Assessment Methods

Assessment includes a written theory test and practical evaluation. Operators must achieve competency in all assessed elements, including safe setup, lifting, and shutdown procedures, to receive certification.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and capable of meeting the demands of practical training. An adequate level of English literacy is also required to fully engage with the course content and assessments. This course can also be offered as an in-house COTS Certification.
