Chainsaw (Maintenance & Cross Cutting)

Course Overview

The Chainsaw – Maintenance & Cross Cutting course provides essential training for individuals working with chainsaws in forestry, arboriculture, landscaping, or grounds maintenance. This course is suitable for both new and existing operatives responsible for chainsaw operation, maintenance, and basic cross-cutting tasks. Through expert instruction and practical assessments, learners will gain the competencies needed to operate chainsaws safely and in compliance with health and safety legislation. Successful participants can pursue roles such as groundsworker, forestry technician, or arborist assistant.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator
• Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
• Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
• Be able to locate and identify key controls and explain their functions. Explain the techniques to service and maintain the chainsaw and explain how to sharpen and maintain the chain using the appropriate equipment
• Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturers and legislative requirements
• Select suitable type of machine and use the appropriate tools and equipment for work being undertaken
• Identify and maintain PPE appropriate to chainsaw – maintenance & cross cutting
• Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
• Operate machinery safely and efficiently
• Explain and identify tension and compression when cutting
• Environmental considerations
• Storage and transport of chainsaw
• Disposal of cut materials
• Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

Assessment Methods

This course is assessed through a combination of classroom-based theory and hands-on practical training. Learners are evaluated via a written theory quiz and a practical skills assessment.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and capable of meeting the demands of practical training. An adequate level of English literacy is also required to fully engage with the course content and assessments.
