Course Overview

The Agricultural Tractor course provides comprehensive training for individuals looking to safely and efficiently operate agricultural tractors in diverse working environments. Suitable for both beginners and experienced operatives, this course is ideal for those working in farming, landscaping, estate maintenance, and rural contracting roles. Through a structured mix of theory and hands-on training, participants will gain critical skills that can lead to operator, technician, or machinery handler positions within the agricultural sector.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

• Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator
• Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
• Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
• Be able to locate and identify key controls and explain their functions
• Set up exclusion zone
• Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements
• Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for agricultural tractor use
• Prepare the agricultural tractor for use
• Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
• Attach and set trailers, mounted and PTO drives ready for operation
• Operate machinery safely and efficiently
• Environmental considerations
• Storage and transport of implements and attachments
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation
• Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

Assessment Methods

This course is assessed through a combination of classroom-based theory and hands-on practical training. Learners are evaluated via a written theory quiz and a practical skills assessment.

Additional Information

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical health, and capable of meeting the demands of practical training. An adequate level of English literacy is also required to fully engage with the course content and assessments.
