What’s the difference between a Red Card and a Blue Card?
Red Card: Trained Operator
A Red CPCS or NPORS card shows that you have successfully completed the required training and passed the relevant operator tests. It demonstrates that you have achieved the minimum industry standard and are qualified to operate machinery under the trained operator scheme.

Blue Card: Competent Operator
A Blue CPCS or NPORS card is awarded after completing the relevant NVQ qualification. It confirms that you have demonstrated your competence in a real working environment and can safely and effectively carry out your role.

How Does the NVQ Process Work?

Step 1: Hold a Valid Red Card

Step 2: Enrol on the Relevant NVQ

Step 3: Workplace Assessment

How Much Experience Do I Need?
Because NVQs are competence-based qualifications, candidates should have practical workplace experience before assessment.

What is CSCS?
CSCS stands for Construction Skills Certification Scheme and is a leading skills certification scheme dedicated to the construction industry in the UK. The various CSCS cards that are issued under the scheme provide proof that any individual working on construction sites have the appropriate training and qualifications for the job they do. Holding a CSCS card is not a legislative requirement and it is entirely up to the principal contractor or client whether workers are required to hold a valid card before they are allowed on site. However, most principal contractors and major house builders require workers on their sites to hold a valid CSCS card.
